What is Autism?
Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) / Autism, refers to a broad range of conditions characterized by challenges with social skills, repetitive behaviors, speech and nonverbal communication. Approximately 1 in 44 children in the U.S. is diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD); CDC 2021.
Rights of Persons With Disability
Anchored in the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) and specific articles of the constitution of Kenya, (2010), (Article 7 (b), Article 20 (5) (b), Article 21 (1) (3), Article 27(4), Article 28, Article 43, Articles 97(1) (c), Article 98 (1) (d), Article 177 (1) (c), Article 54.
Autism Diagnosis
Based on the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (5th ed.), an autistic child experiences limitations in the areas of social communication and interaction in addition to restrictive, repetitive patterns of behaviour, interests, or activities. These deficits may affect their active participation in academic settings, undermining their overall academic outcomes.
CRPD Article 19
Article 19 of the CRPD that emphasizes that Persons with Disabilities should be supported to live independently. The CRPD recognizes the equal right of all persons with disabilities to live in the community, with choices equal to others, and be included and fully participate in all spheres
